You play an important role in the prevention of cavities which can harm your healthy smile. Working with Dr. Jon Molinare and his team, you can create a healthy, cavity-free smile for years to come. Why do you want to avoid cavities? It’s simple, cavities are holes in tooth enamel from erosion due to plaque formation in the mouth. The oral bacteria in plaque reacts to the sugars in the mouth left behind from the foods you eat–sugary, starchy foods and drinks–by producing acid. These acids erode tooth enamel over time. Cavities can form on the top surface of teeth such as the molars, or between teeth, and on the root surfaces of the teeth if you have gum disease or receding gums. So what can you do to prevent cavities?

Eating– consume a healthy diet and limit snacking between meals. Lower your intake of sugary and starchy foods and choose healthy alternatives instead, such as cheese, almonds, celery, apple slices or carrot sticks which support healthy teeth.

Fluoridating – fluoride serves to strengthen tooth enamel, by keeping it strong and resilient. You can also expose your teeth to the benefits of fluoride by switching from bottled water to tap water, and you can also use a fluoride-based toothpaste or oral rinse.

Brushing– brush your teeth twice daily for at least two minutes to rid your teeth and gums from plaque, Use a soft bristled tooth brush and avoid over brushing. Make sure the bristles are in top shape, because frayed bristles can’t clean teeth effectively. Replace your toothbrush every three months or as soon as the bristles fray.

Professional cleanings – six month dental cleanings and checkups are also indispensable to cavity-free teeth and healthy gums. Not only do we spot problems with your smile in the early stages, we remove hardened plaque–tartar, which daily brushing can’t. And if you are cavity prone, we may recommend dental sealants or fluoride treatments to help.

So stop cavities from developing on your watch, by practicing diligent oral hygiene habits and enlisting our help to keep your smile healthy and bright!
