When severe tooth decay goes untreated, it will gradually penetrate the interior of the tooth, spreading bacterial decay and infection throughout the pulp and root of the tooth. In time, this can lead to the total loss of the tooth. While some people might opt to replace the tooth with a dental bridge, others find a dental implant to be the most natural and effective method of tooth restoration.

Your initial appointment with your dentist, Dr. Jon Molinare, involves a thorough examination of your mouth, which will include taking X-rays or a CT scan. This gives us a detailed understanding of the overall health of your mouth as well as the available bone structure in that part of your jaw.

If past issues with chronic gum disease or tooth decay have compromised bone structure in your jaw, you might receive a bone graft. This will restore sufficient structure to mount an implant.

Once any bone structure issues have been addressed, we can install a titanium dental implant in a single outpatient appointment. For this, you will need to be fully sedated for your own comfort, so you will need to arrange to have someone drive you home.

To install the implant, your dentist will make a small incision in your gums to gain direct access to your jawbone. A narrow channel will be made in the bone and a titanium abutment will be screwed into place. Titanium is known to be biologically safe and will eventually fuse to your existing bone in a process known as osseointegration.

Once the implant has been fully integrated into the surrounding bone tissues, your dentist can go about the process of fitting you for a standard dental crown.
